Arcangel, Cory

Cory Arcangel (*1978 Buffalo, New York, lives in Stavanger, Norway) is a central figure within a generation of artists responding to technological developments in an increasingly information-saturated globalized culture. Arcangel's post-conceptual practice employs Photoshop gradients, video game modifications, and YouTube tutorials to produce works that explore the inextricable bond between digital technology and contemporary pop culture. Part of Arcangel's interest in trends is their rapid aging, which is structurally implemented in their material—their programming, their codes, and their hardware. Based on his exhibition  Flying Foxes At the Kunstverein in Hamburg, Arcangel proposed a much smaller version of his aluminum wall work, whose vectorized stripes are based on iPhone photos of Adidas tracksuits. The edition, printed in the office of the Kunstverein with the local printer on transparent film in DIN A4 format, represents Arcangel's use of everyday materials from zip-lock bags to Nintendo cassettes. As reflective surfaces, Arcangel's simple plastic sheets refer to the ubiquity of the screen, our primary viewing mode.
