Serie: Imaginary Architectures

These prints belong to Otto Beckmann’s series of ‘imaginary architectures’, which the artist developed from the late 1960s using a specially constructed computer named the ‘a.i. 70’.

Otto Beckmann (b. 1908, Vladivostok, d. 1997, Vienna) was one of the first artists to exhibit computer-generated prints, initially using a machine built by his son in 1970. His work has been exhibited at Neue Galerie Graz (2008); Kunsthalle Bremen (2006); Museum Moderner Kunst, Palais Liechtenstein, Vienna (1983); Niederösterreichisches Landesmuseum, Vienna (1979); Palais Attems, Graz (1976) and Secession, Vienna (1969 and 1957)’. Beckmann’s work was featured in the exhibition ‘The Policeman’s Beard is Half Constructed: Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence’ at Bonner Kunstverein in 2017.
