Bendzulla, Johannes

Johannes Bendzulla plays with ideas around the desired authenticity of (the pursuance of) art and the attributes of the contemporary entrepreneur with the aid of simulated and genuine materiality. He deploys classical artistic materials, such as laid (vat) paper and wood, as well as ideal-typical advertising images and slogans, but also computer-generated algorithms that produce whole series of images and thus flaunt their very materiality. His annual edition depicts a laughing face with rings around the eyes, which, though its patently anthropomorphising associations, can be read as a comment upon neoliberal signs of fatigue and the precarious existential condition of material itself against the backdrop of an increasingly mediated world.

Johannes Bendzulla (*1984, lives and works in Düsseldorf) had solo exhibitions with Natalia Hug, Cologne and Brennan & Griffin, New York. His works were further on show at a.o. Kienzle Art Foundation, Berlin, Kunstverein Leipzig, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf as well as Ve.sch Vienna. Johannes Bendzulla is part of artists group Galerie BRD.
