Silchenko, Masha

The work of Masha Silchenko revolves around introspection, dreamlike apparitions, and chimerical connections. Silchenko's focus on the visible and invisible and her extensive study of light and shadow is evident not only in her motifs, but also in the materials and installation of her works. In her exhibition Silchenko referred to different handcraft techniques and combined them with her own artistic methods. Poetic texts, thoughts, and stories are written on canvas fabrics with bleach, over which glazed layers of paint are applied. In a selection of colored pencil drawings in the same format Silchenko developed her own mysterious world of fantastic figures. In their continuity, the drawings have a diary-like character. As a Jahresgabe, three drawings are shown that take up recurring mythological and animistic motifs in Silchenko's work. With reference to Japanese mythology, one of the drawings shows a portrait with a water snake. The deceitful “Nure-onna” is a female demon that ambushes unsuspecting beach visitors in order to eat them. A tree and a weeping cloud refer to emotional states, dreams and visions.
