Tegegne, Ramaya

Ramaya Tegegne's works address the processes which determine and consitute the art world, problematizing how social, economic and cultural conditions impose themselves on artistic practices. She questions the underlying social prerequisites which determine how art is produced, presented and received. In The Equality of Possibility, the current group show at the Kunstverein Bielefeld, Tegegne presents Framer Framed, a docufiction video. The film problematizes the structures – both representative and administrative – of cultural institutions, revealing the contradictions between public image and institutional practices.

For the Kunstverein’s 2021/22 annual editions, Tegegne has provided eight T-shirts with the screen-printed text Somebody in New York Loves Me. This work looks back to Tegegne’s first institutional solo exhibition in 2015, also called Somebody in New York Loves Me at the Fri Art - Kunsthalle Fribourg; the piece addresses conditions within the art business, young artists’ desire for recognition and visibility, and their knowledge of their own precarious conditions.
